Message to the city from the Dean and Bishop Libby

5th November 2020

From the Dean of Derby, Peter Robinson

Here at Derby Cathedral we send our good wishes, thoughts and prayers to our friends and partners in Derby and throughout Derbyshire.

For us all this is such a difficult time, not least of all for local businesses, their employees and for those whose livelihood is potentially under threat.

We are mindful of all coping with COVID-19 infection, especially those who are currently hospitalised and those who have died, and hold each person affected in our hearts.

We are full of admiration of NHS staff, their courage and commitment to our society’s health and offer our moral support to them all.

Derby Cathedral will be open for private prayer six days a week and we will continue broadcasting our services in line with government and Church of England regulations. Even if it is only accessed remotely, we believe that continued public worship is essential for our nation’s wellbeing, mental health, social cohesion and hope during challenging times like this.

We hope we can be a support beyond the city to the communities of Derby Diocese whether rural or urban during this time. Notices about Cathedral opening times, broadcast services and other events will be regularly updated on our social media, including on our website www.derbycathedral.org.

Bishop Libby, joining me in sending this message, says ‘These seem like dark days. Already grieving, anxious, troubled and stretched, we face further pain and uncertainty. When hope seems in short supply, our prayer is to reflect the light of Christ - a light shining into darkness. Be assured of our prayers, and our practical partnership in these coming weeks’.

Do visit us for prayer and comfort.  Let’s keep in touch with each other during this difficult period and may everyone even in the midst of all that we face, find space to discover the peace of Jesus Christ.
