Derby Cathedral Choir is one of the only professional ensembles of its kind within the East Midlands, singing a broad range of repertoire to the very highest standards from medieval plainsong to newly commissioned works.
The Cathedral Choir consists of 20 Boy Choristers, 20 Girl Choristers and 6 Lay Clerks (adult professional singers). On top of the almost daily singing of services in the Cathedral (the Opus Dei), the Cathedral Choir regularly undertakes tours both within the UK and internationally, CD recordings, BBC broadcasts, and concerts with other professional ensembles and soloists.
Previous collaborations have been with the Heart of England Orchestra, Sinfonia Viva, and the Sixteen, to name a few. The Cathedral Choir also joins annually with the Cathedral Choirs of Coventry, Leicester and Southwell for the East Midlands Four Choirs’ Festival Evensong.
All our Choristers receive a world-class musical education, including free one-to-one singing and music theory lessons from our team of professional musicians, and are paid a termly scholarship for their work at the Cathedral.
Membership of the Cathedral Choir is free and no prior musical training is necessary. Choristers often leave the Cathedral Choir with a significant amount of experience in professional standard music making and as a result many have gone on to choral and organ scholarships at Oxford, Cambridge and other prestigious universities and music colleges.
Each week, Choristers sing a similar amount of repertoire that a school choir would in a whole academic year. We also encourage all our Choristers to work their way through the Royal School of Church Music’s Voice for Life scheme, with most Choristers leaving with either a Silver or Gold award.
We are always delighted to hear from the parents of prospective Choristers. To find out more about becoming a Chorister in Derby Cathedral Choir, please email Alexander Binns, Director of Music, at firstname.lastname@example.org
