Cathedral Social Committee visit to Commonwealth War graves

Written on 09/09/2024

The Social Committee recently took a trip to Nottingham Road Cemetery to visit the Commonwealth War Graves.

Dave MacAlister, Chair of the Social Committee said of the visit, “We were pleased to have a guided tour, even those of us who have lived in the area for many years, learned an awful lot about not only the war graves but also how this cemetery was established in 1855, the difference in consecrated and un-consecrated ground and who could be buried where.”

Along with other burials from St. Alkmunds, Joseph Wright’s remains were removed and reinterred there in 1968. Afterwards the moved across to St. Mary’s Parish Church for refreshments and an interesting talk on its history by the vicar, Rev Dr Jason Ward.
