Cathedral Organs

Organs have been part of the backbone of English Choral worship for centuries, and the instruments at Derby continue to inspire worshippers and music lovers alike to this day. Our organs can be heard most days at the Cathedral supporting our liturgy; and also at any of our Summer Organ Concerts, details of which are posted on the events page of our website.

The Cathedral is home to three organs. The principal instrument is the 100-stop, 4-manual Compton organ, which was built on the West Gallery in 1939. This instrument (of around 3000 pipes) speaks magnificently into the building, and is ideal for leading the congregational singing, and for solo repertoire. The Compton organ is augmented by a digital Viscount organ, which is used to accompany the choir. The Cathedral is also the custodian of a beautiful 4-stop box organ, which is particularly effective at accompanying smaller-scale chamber music.
