The Derbyshire Singers: The glory of Venice with His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts

The Derbyshire Singers are delighted to welcome, for the final concert of their  50th season celebrations, His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts, soloists Anna Dennis Soprano, Louise Collett, Mezzo Soprano and Andrew MacKenzie-Wicks Tenor. Our conductor for this exciting evening of music, will be Lynne Clark.

His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts is a group of virtuoso wind players who specialise in playing Renaissance and Baroque music in historically appropriate styles on original instruments.

The noble sounds of cornetts and sagbuts were amongst the most versatile instrumental colours available to the composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They were heard in many musical contexts, in alternation with voices in the extravagant liturgy of the great Italian and Spanish churches , above all the Basilica of St Mark’s in Venice . We are honoured to be able to perform with His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts, works by  Giovanni Gabrieli (1557 – 1612)  Venice’s greatest composer and life long organist at St Mark’s in Venice and Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) who was hired as Maestro di Capella of St Mark’s Church, in 1613 , one year after Gabrielli’s death .

It will be exciting and interesting to hear the music of these two composers sung and played as it would have been when it was written and even more fitting to be performing this beautiful music programme in the wonderful historic Derby Cathedral.

Tickets: £18 including programme, Students in full time education are free.
