Derby Cathedral Embroidery Workshop commissioned to make a cope for the new Bishop of Argyll and the Isles

Derby Cathedral Embroidery Workshop have recently completed a commission to make a cope for the new Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. The Right Reverend David Railton was Consecrated and Installed during a moving service at Oban Cathedral on the 28th of August.

The Workshop also provided a matching stole and mitre.

Bishop David was ordained in Derby Cathedral in 2008 and served his curacy under The Very Revd Dr John Davies.

Prior to ordination David Railton and his wife Sarah were members of the congregation at St. Werburgh’s Spondon, when Canon Richard Andrews was vicar there.  David served his curacy in the Melbourne Benefice under John Davies.  He then moved to Hazelwood where he was also Chaplain to the then Bishop of Derby, Alistair Redfern.

The design is inspired by the scenery of the area – the sea, the sky and the islands.  Work started on the cope shortly after the announcement of David’s appointment as Bishop, and is the generous gift of his last parish Dunoon and the Isle of Bute.

Canon Richard and Alison were delighted to be present at David’s Consecration and Installation at Oban Cathedral on 28th August, where David wore his cope and stole for the first time.  The Revd Canon Dr Elizabeth Thomson and the Very Revd Dr John Davies were also present.
