Derby Cathedral were host to a weekend of events to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla which attracted interviews by BBC Radio Derby, BBC East Midlands Today and UCB1 Digital Radio.
The Cathedral Bellringers marked the start of the celebratory weekend by taking part in a nationwide event called ‘Ring for the King’ where the Cathedral bells rang for over three hours across the City of Derby.
Saturday saw hundreds of visitors through the doors to watch the Coronation live on the big screen, funded by the City Council. The day included activities for children such as crown making and biscuit decorating as well as refreshments and opportunities for photographs at our Coronation ‘Selfie stand!’
On Sunday we had visitors join us for ‘The Big Lunch’ with people joining us from across the county and a special service of Commemoration in the afternoon attended by over 400 people.
Monday saw members of the public get involved in ‘The Big Help Out’; there was the opportunity to meet Cathedral volunteers, learn more about the Cathedral Embroiderers and even have a go at ringing some handbells! There was also a ‘Children’s Organ Event’ in the afternoon which gave children the rare opportunity to play the Cathedral Organ. The day ended with a Coronation themed recital by the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Alex Binns.
The Dean said: ‘We were delighted with how many people attended events and services at Derby Cathedral over the weekend. There was a real sense of excitement and happiness at the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla. The music and the liturgy of the Commemoration service on Sunday evening was outstanding and much appreciated by all who were there. Thank you to all our staff, to the choir and to our many volunteers for their tireless support in creating a memorable weekend for the people of Derbyshire and the City of Derby.’
