When Gaia came to Derby Cathedral

Written on 17/10/2022

We’ve had a busy few weeks at Derby Cathedral with the addition of Gaia, the spectacular art installation by UK renowned artist Luke Jerram.

Housed in the Cathedral from 22 September – 16 October Gaia is a touring artwork measuring seven metres in diameter and created from 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The artwork provided the unique opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions above the nave of the Cathedral, with a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones is played alongside the sculpture.

This spectacular installation stimulates thought over key issues of climate change, creation, and our place on the Earth.

The Cathedral welcomed visitors from far and wide and the events programme that ran alongside Gaia enabled visitors to enjoy wellbeing events, music, and nature walks, and contemplate the themes presented by the artwork.  There was also the opportunity for visitors to enjoy Gaia from above by visiting our ‘Top of the World’ experience, viewing Gaia from the Cathedral balconies.
