A New Canon Residentiary for Derby
This morning the Dean of Derby made the following statement to the Cathedral Community:
‘The Bishop of Derby, with the warm support of the Dean of Derby is announcing today the appointment of the Rev’d Prebendary Romita Shrisunder as Canon for Community Outreach and Social Justice at Derby Cathedral. Romita is currently Bishop’s Director of Ordinands in Lichfield Diocese. Prior to her current position Romita served as an incumbent in the diocese of Derby.’
‘Romita is a priest with many gifts. She will become our Cathedral Safeguarding Lead and give leadership on our social justice work in the city of Derby and the county of Derbyshire. We look forward to welcoming Romita after our Easter celebrations and to working with her as she pioneers this new role in the life of our Cathedral Church. We will be planning a date for Romita’s installation as a Residentiary Canon over the next few weeks and communicate this as soon as we are able. This announcement is being made subject to all legal and safeguarding requirements being fulfilled.’
On welcoming Romita’s appointment the Bishop of Derby, The Rt Rev’d Libby Lane says: ‘we look forward to welcoming Romita back to the diocese of Derby and to working with her on the themes of community outreach and social justice. Romita brings gifts of strategic leadership and practical ministry for community outreach into our midst. As well as being deeply pastoral in her approach, Romita brings great experience in terms of supporting those who seek ordination and of nurturing people into Christian ministry’.
Romita says: “As Bishop’s Director of Ordinands, I have been deeply grateful to God for the grace and privilege of having walked alongside so many candidates listening faithfully for God’s call. The past eight years in the Diocese of Lichfield have been a sacred and formative season, marked by prayer, attentive listening, shared discernment, and a growing trust in the faithful work of the Holy Spirit. With humility and hope, I now turn toward the next chapter of my calling as Canon for Community Outreach and Social Justice at Derby Cathedral. I look forward to being shaped by a new community and to serving in the worship, witness, and common life of the Cathedral, trusting that God will continue to lead, sustain, and surprise me in this next season of ministry, as together we seek to proclaim and embody the Kingdom of God: good news for all, to the glory of God and building up of the Church”.
The Rt Revd Dr Michael Ipgrave, Bishop of Lichfield said: “Romita goes with my thanks for her diligence and thoroughness over the last eight years. I am delighted for her that her calling is taking her in a new direction in her ministry. She will be well suited to her work at Derby Cathedral which I pray will bear much fruit.”
The Dean of Derby says: ‘it is a delight to be welcoming Romita into Derby Cathedral’s life. Romita has a love of God that is infectious and which will reach many new people through her work as our Canon for Community Outreach and Social Justice, and with the opportunities that the growing congregations of Derby Cathedral bring. Romita is passionate about Christian education which she will lead across the Cathedral’s life. I know that the whole Cathedral will enjoy working with Romita over the coming years.’
