Heritage Heroes Film: A tribute to your exceptional volunteers

Written on 17/03/2025

A while ago our Head of Operations Jessica Kilmurray nominated Derek Limer, former Keeper of the Treasures, as a Heritage Hero as part of a Heritage Alliance initiative. He sadly didn’t win, however the Heritage Alliance has put together a fantastic video showcasing all nominees, which can be seen HERE

Derek features at 5 minutes and 28 seconds so please do take a look!

Derek has been a volunteer at Derby Cathedral for over 40 years. He exemplifies dedication and passion in his service to heritage. As a Cathedral Guide, Altar Server, Ministry of Welcome team member and former Keeper of the Treasures, Derek has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Cathedral which is he happy to share with all who he speaks to.

Derek has guided countless tours over the years, offering engaging presentations that bring the Cathedral’s history to life. Whether recounting the provenance of historic items or detailing anecdotes of key moments, his enthusiasm captivates all who meet him.

Derek’s time as Keeper of the Treasures has left a legacy; he kept meticulous records, not just of our own notable pieces, but also of those on loan from across the diocese. He created an invaluable catalogue of the items which we will continue to use for years to come. Derek’s precision and thoroughness, as always, shine through.

His peers describe him as gentle, professional, and modest, balancing precision with a great sense of humour. Stories of Derek navigating stormy Christmas mornings or his wry observations about traditions highlight his warmth and relatability. Despite health challenges, his contributions remain steadfast, showcasing his enduring commitment to the Cathedral.

Derek’s influence resonates deeply within the Cathedral community. He is the first point of reference for any historical questions. He has proven to be a reliable and approachable mentor, training others to be guides and servers. As Alan Flintham aptly states, Derek epitomizes the oral history of Derby Cathedral, sharing a wealth of knowledge freely and with passion.

This nomination celebrates Derek’s extraordinary contribution to Derby Cathedral. Through decades of service, he has become more than a volunteer; he is a custodian of the Cathedral’s history and a true Heritage Hero.
