Derby Cathedral Embroidery Group Create Copes for St Paul’s Cathedral, Dundee

The very talented Embroiderers’ who volunteer each week at Derby Cathedral have just finished working on the first of six Copes for St Paul’s Cathedral, Dundee.

Originally large cloaks, Copes soon became another way to worship and celebrate by using colour and are often worn on special occasions when the Cathedral Chapter, such as the Dean and the Canons, would be present.

The Copes feature a design that is inspired by the river Tay, the river that flows through the city of Dundee, and close by the Cathedral.

The six Copes will each depict the river Tay at a different time; winter, summer, high tide, low tide, morning and evening and the colours will include different shades of purples and gold. Purple was chosen as this is the corporate colour of St Paul’s Cathedral, Dundee  and because the Diocese of Brecin badge is purple and gold.

The first Cope has now been delivered and the Embroiderers’ will soon begin work on the remaining five, each which will sit beautifully alongside each other.
