Derby Cathedral Appoints Canon for Community Learning

Written on 27/06/2022

The Right Reverend Libby Lane, Bishop of Derby, and the Very Reverend Dr Peter Robinson, Dean of Derby, are delighted to announce the appointment of the Revd Carla Vicêncio Prior as the Canon for Community Learning at Derby Cathedral.

The purpose of this new role is to lead the growth of Derby Cathedral as a learning community, enabling it to become a place recognised for its public engagement with the Christian faith and as a resource for both church and society. Working with all existing Cathedral communities, the role also includes further developing the Cathedral’s relationship with Derby Cathedral School. Carla will also be responsible for the learning agenda as she develops relationships with other communities in Derby.

She has a passion for social justice and teaching the next generations about the love of God. She has a background in business and marketing, a degree in Business, a master’s in Trade Economics and a master’s in Theology.

Currently Team Vicar in Wirksworth Team Ministry, Carla is looking forward to returning to Derby Cathedral, where a few years ago she spent some very happy months as part of her curacy.

She said: “I’m looking forward to getting involved with all the various communities that the Cathedral engages with, to learn together about what God may be saying in our lives and the lives of our neighbours. I am really thrilled to be coming back to the Cathedral.

“I will miss the friends and colleagues I’ve made in Wirksworth – they are an incredible team of people. We have been through so much together over the last few years, and I thank them for their love and support.”

On announcing the appointment, Bishop Libby said: “Carla brings a variety of significant skills to the role of Canon for Community Learning. Her own love of learning and commitment to teaching as a sign of God’s unconditional love for all, and her ability to engage with people at every stage of life and from all backgrounds, will be gifts for the Cathedral and the many diverse communities in the City of Derby and across the Diocese. I am delighted to welcome her to the role.”

Dean Peter said: “The communities of Derby Cathedral look forward to welcoming Carla later this year. Carla brings many gifts to this new role which recognises the central place of learning and education in the life of the Cathedral church. This is an exciting time for the Cathedral as it works strategically with its partners in the City of Derby and the County of Derbyshire to fulfil its vision and strategy as a centre for worship and mission serving the Diocese of Derby.”

Carla is Portuguese but has lived in the UK for 37 years and is married with two grown-up sons. She has lived in six different countries over the years and has travelled extensively in Europe, South America and eastern Africa.

In her spare time, she enjoys cycling, reading, learning new languages and above all, good food.

Carla will take up her new role in the autumn.
