A Top Spot for the Cathedral’s Bakewell Screen
The results are in for the Association of English Cathedrals Cathedral Treasures competition and our wonderful Bakewell Screen has made the podium!
We’ve finished in third, with the Bakewell Screen being voted one of the top three cathedral treasures in England and Wales.
The Association of English Cathedral’s winter campaign showcased 50 remarkable Cathedral treasures across their social media platforms over 50 days and Derby Cathedral’s Bakewell Screen successfully made the final 10. This was based on the number of likes, shares, and engagements on social media throughout the campaign.
Members of the public were then asked to vote for their winner out of the 10 finalists and Derby Cathedral came in at number 3.
The Cathedral Treasures campaign was based on the latest volume by Janet Gough, OBE, author, lecturer and advisor on historic churches and cathedrals, called Deans’ Choice: Cathedral Treasures of England and Wales. The volume tells the story of 50 treasures from 44 Church of England cathedrals and six cathedrals from the Church in Wales – each one was chosen by the Dean or sensory of the cathedral featured.
Commenting on the announcement, The Association of English Cathedral’s Janet Gough said: “I am delighted to see the Bakewell Screen from Derby Cathedral, perhaps a less well-known cathedral – although full of treasures – voted one of the top three cathedral treasures in England and Wales”
The Dean of Derby; The Very Revd Dr Peter Robinson commented “We are delighted that our very own Bakewell Screen has been recognised as one of the country’s top Cathedral treasures, it is a key feature of our Cathedral and I’d like to say a huge thank you to all those who voted.”
The Derby Cathedral Bakewell Screen is a wrought-iron chancel screen manufactured by local iron-smith Robert Bakewell, it extends across the width of the church and is a focal point of the Cathedral. The candles that sit on top of the Screen are lit during festive Services throughout the year.
