Holy Week and Easter Services

Maundy Thursday (13th April)

11.00 am Diocesan Eucharist with Blessing of the Oils

A gathering of lay and ordained ministers from all across the Diocese of Derby for this Maundy Thursday Eucharist at which vows and promises are renewed and olive oil is blessed for use in baptism, healing, and ordination services through the year. The preacher is the Revd Karen Hamblin, Area Dean of Chesterfield, and the Bishop of Derby presides at the Eucharist.

7.30 pm Liturgy of the Last Supper

The Eucharist on Maundy Thursday evening is a great celebration of Jesus's Passover meal with his disciples, the Last Supper, remembered in every Eucharist; and we also remember and enact his washing of the feet of his disciples. But the service ends in silence and darkness, as the altar is stripped of its rich cloths, and a vigil is kept as we remember his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and his arrest.

Good Friday (14th April)

A service for Good Friday with prayer, reflection, silence and music. The service begins at 12 noon with the Preaching of the Cross: the preacher is the Revd Dr Simon Taylor, Canon Chancellor of Derby Cathedral. From 1.30 pm, the Liturgy of the Passion begins. Please come and go as you need to during the three hours.

Easter Eve (15th April)

On the eve of Easter Day, as darkness begins to fall, the new fire is kindled and brought into the Cathedral and points of light begin to move through the darkness, spreading as the word spreads of the great drama of God's salvation, until with the Gospel the light blazes out and there is a great shout of triumph. This Easter Vigil service has been from very ancient times an occasion for people to be baptised and confirmed, and that tradition continues tonight as people affirm their faith and are baptised and confirmed by the Bishop of Derby.
