Experience Christmas - Experience Easter

• Christmas and Easter in a multi-sensory experience

• the meaning behind the stories

Travel in time to the events of the original Christmas and Easter. Take part in hands-on workshops based at a series of scenes which tell the story. Grow in understanding of how the people in the story felt and thought and what the story means for people today. Encounter Mary’s kitchen table, the shepherds’ campfire on the hillside, the stable – imagine entering Jerusalem in triumph, the upper room ready for supper, the foot of the cross.

  • design a Christmas message
  • make a gift for the newborn child
  • enact the journey of the wise men
  • explore meaning through actions and experiences: being alone, sharing bread, following a path, helping each other.

Festivals and Faith - Christianity in Colour

• Advent to Pentecost in artefact and action

• the colour and experience of the Christian year

There’s more to the Christian story than just Christmas. Discover the before and after. Make a journey through the seasons and find how faith is expressed in colour and action. Forgiveness, remembering, looking forward, being aware of others’ needs and hopes, making difficult choices – all these find expression in action throughout the Christian year.

  • touch the ash of Ash Wednesday
  • smell real frankincense and myrrh
  • make a new year’s resolution (any time of year!)

Pilgrimage - Sacred Space

  • develop a sense of wonder in the discovery of a place of holiness
  • make a journey together

Making a journey together is a way to help a group or class to bond in a common purpose – a great way to end a year or begin it. Pilgrimage is a practice shared by several world religions. Your journey can set out from the ancient monastic site of Darley Abbey and walk by the riverside all the way to the Cathedral (about ninety minutes away). Or for a shorter journey, start at the Bridge Chapel (only ten minutes!) or make your journey around the Cathedral itself. When you arrive, discover the altar and the font and how these represent refreshment and a new start on the Christian journey.

  • carry a symbol of pilgrimage
  • games for the journey and mementoes of the way
  • words for the journey – poems and stories – and silence to meditate
  • refreshment at the ancient well of St Alkmund, Derby’s patron saint
  • make a pilgrim badge
