The Revd Dr Susan Jones

Acting Dean of Derby

Sue, born in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, was one of the first women priests to be ordained in Wales. A former Midland Bank employee and trainee teacher, she has been chaplain at Swansea University and Director of Pastoral studies at St Michael's College in Llandaff, Cardiff.

She also served in the Parish of Bangor as associated priest and Director of the St Seiriol Centre for Christian discipleship and ministry before taking on the role of Dean of Bangor in 2011, making her the first female Dean in the Church of Wales. Susan also serves as Director of Mission and Ministry within the Diocese of Derby.

The Revd Dr Simon Taylor

Canon Chancellor

Simon became Canon Chancellor in 2012, following ten years as a parish priest in the Diocese of Bristol.  As well as being a member of Chapter, Simon is the Safeguarding Lead for the Cathedral.  He has additional roles in the Deanery and Diocese. Simon is the Area Dean for Derby City Deanery, which brings together all the Church of England parishes in the city.  He is also Director of Curate Training for the Diocese, supporting those new to ordained ministry across Derbyshire.  He has published two books: How to Read the Bible (without switching off your brain) (SPCK, 2015) and Imitation and Scapegoats (Grove, 2016).  Both are available from the Cathedral Bookshop.  Married with two children, Simon enjoys Dr Who, real ale and walking in Derbyshire.

The Revd Dr Elizabeth Thomson

Canon Missioner

Elizabeth came to Derby in 2014 from a team parish in Witney and an earlier curacy in Somerset; originally from Edinburgh, she is gradually working her way north. Before she was ordained she taught English in schools in Edinburgh and Wells. She has walked to Santiago de Compostela twice and is wondering where to walk next. Her role as Canon Missioner is to explore, begin conversations and create links.

The Revd Chris Moorsom

Canon Precentor

Chris joined the Cathedral in March 2014: a Parish Priest for 30 years, mostly in Salisbury Diocese, he also held a portfolio for supporting parishes in Church Music in Worship. He is a musician, having sung in numerous choirs (including Christ Church Oxford, the Tallis Scholars and the Sherborne Chamber Choir), composes music, plays the violin and piano, and has an eclectic taste in music. He is married to Liz (a primary school Headteacher). They have four grown-up children, and three grandchildren. He also enjoys walking, cycling, reading, family get-togethers, drama and travelling.

Canon Mark Titterton

Mark is a lay member of the Chapter and Chair of the Chapter’s finance committee, as well as being a former Warden of the Cathedral. He is also treasurer of Edensor Parish in the Peak District, where he lives. He is, in addition, Executive Chair of the Diocesan Board of Finance.

 

 

 

 

The Hon David Legh

Lay member of Chapter 

David joined the chapter in March 2010. He was High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 2006-7 and has since taken a keen interest in the Cathedral. He is a Chartered Surveyor in general practice and combines this with farming and landowning interests at Cubley where he and his family have lived for 30 years.

David is married to Jane,a non-stipendiary priest in the South Dales & Longford 8 benefices. They have four children and three grandchildren. If ever marooned on a desert island, David would insist on a guitar as his luxury.

 

 

Brian Dollamore

Lay member of Chapter

Brian Dollamore is former Chairman of the Derby Diocesan Board of Finance and a former Church Warden in the diocese.  He is a devoted father of three, and a grandfather too.  Brian joined the Chapter in 2011.

 

 

 

Val Grahl

Val Grahl

Lay member of Chapter

Val has worshipped at Derby Cathedral since 1987; she is currently one of the Cathedral Wardens and became a lay member of the Chapter in April 2014. Val is the mother of two sons who were both head choristers in the Cathedral Choir and she also sings with the Cathedral Voluntary Choir.

Before retirement, Val worked with children with special educational needs in both mainstream and special schools and was a school governor. When not at the Cathedral, she loves spending time with her grandchildren, enjoys bird-watching and visiting National Trust properties.

 

 

Rachel Morris

Chapter Steward

Rachel was delighted to join the Cathedral in January 2015 as Chapter Steward.  She lived in Derby until she was 18 then moved around the UK managing different businesses.  Prior to the Cathedral she worked for YMCA for 9 years managing diverse operations and governance.  Rachel is also a Board Member and trustee at Midlands Community Finance. She lives in Derby enjoys live music and is a regular at Derby County games.

The Revd Adam Dickens

Adam Dickens

Chaplain to the Cathedral

Adam joined Derby Cathedral in the Spring of 2014. The main focus of his work is as Anglican Chaplain at the University. Prior to arriving, Adam was in Dorset where he had been living as part of two different Christian communities, latterly at Hilfield Friary with the Anglican Franciscans, and prior to that at The Pilsdon Community, living alongside those struggling with poor mental health, addiction, and homelessness. He has also worked in parishes in inner-city Portsmouth and Worcestershire. Adam is married to Teresa and enjoys many things in life including the countryside, sport, and the arts (both high and low culture!)

Hugh Morris

Hugh

Director of Music

Hugh Morris joined the Cathedral team in January 2015. He leads the music department and is much enjoying immersing himself in the life of the Cathedral and city. An experienced and accomplished choir trainer, organist, and trained teacher, with a passion for a wide range of music both sacred and secular, he has worked in a number of different Cathedrals, churches and schools up and down the country, including Salisbury Cathedral, Hexham Abbey, and, most recently, Christchurch Priory. He particularly enjoys working with young people, which is now largely with the two teams of choristers in the Cathedral choirs.

Hugh is married to Sarah, a part-time GP.  They have two daughters aged 8 and 10, both of whom also love music.  When not at work Hugh enjoys eating Sarah's excellent cooking, pulling on walking boots and heading off into the countryside, and DIY.

Martin Whiteley

Martin moved to Derby in 2012 to take up a lectureship at the university and then joined the local band of bell ringers at the Cathedral. In January 2015 he was appointed to the post of Ringing Master. Martin learnt to ring as a youngster at Wells Cathedral in Somerset some fifty years ago and is now getting the hang of it! His wife Maggie is also a keen bell ringer and they spend their spare time enjoying mountainous parts of the world and training for triathlons.

Head Verger

Geoff's first association with Derby Cathedral was singing in the choir and he then volunteered in the Vergers department where he now works as Head Verger.  Geoff has a passion for music and has a healthy social life with his ex-colleagues from the Emergency Services.  Geoff also likes gardening and DIY. 
 

 

 

Mat Mawson

Matt MawsonCanons' Verger

Mat has worked at the Cathedral since March 2005. Mat looks after the building, keeping it clean and tidy as well as setting up and taking part in the daily round of services. Mat's role also involves assisting the Clergy on a day-to-day basis. 

Mat originally trained as a chef and worked in the Hospitality industry until starting at the Cathedral. 

Mat was baptised and confirmed after joining the Cathedral which he says was "a great experience" making him feel "much more a part of the Christian faith & community." 

Mat's interests outside of work include walking, playing snooker and going to the Cinema and when time allows, Mat is a keen golf player.

Dave has been a member of the Cathedral congregation for 12 years, firstly in the pews and then as a server.  From 2011 until the present day Dave has worked as a part-time Verger.

Dave enjoys spending time on his allotment, loves travelling and is a keen Derby County supporter.

 

Joe Grimoldby

Appointed in February 2015, Joe originally joined the Cathedral as an apprentice before obtaining a permanent position. He is one of the Church of England's youngest employees. A Derbeian to the core, he is proud to be a part of the Vergers team.

Peter Goddard

Cathedral Bookshop Manager

Peter opened Derby Cathedral bookshop on 18th June 2012. He has over 28 years’ experience of working in the Christian books and gifts field in Derby city centre alone and joined us following the closure of Wesley Owen. Peter is passionate about ensuring that Derby retains a Christian bookshop, believing (as we all do) that it provides a much valued service to Derby, Derbyshire and beyond.

Simon Pleydell

Simon opened the refurbished Cathedral Café on 28th June 2012. He has lived and worked in London as a chef for 26 years before deciding to relocate to Derby, his childhood home. Simon specialises in soups, cakes and quiches and his reputation for good quality homemade food is beginning to spread!

Mandy has worked in the Christian books field for over 4 years, and in the retail industry (pharmacy) for over 20 years. Mandy enjoys playing the piano, and lists DIY among her hobbies.

Peter has worked for the Cathedral since 2004. In his role as Finance Officer, Peter is responsible for all of the Cathedral finances, including the Coffee Shop and Car Park.

Kim has worked in the Cathedral Office for many years. Kim is an active member of the Cathedral congregation and assists as a volunteer on the stewarding team. In her spare time Kim enjoys spending time with her family and friends and trips to London to see her daughter.

Lucille Parsisson

Lucille ParsissonPA to the Dean, Canon Precentor and Director of Music

Lucille’s role is to provide administrative support to the Dean, Canon Precentor and the Director of Music in the Cathedral office. From producing the clergy daily and Sunday rota to helping organise Cathedral and civic services, Lucille is kept busy and challenged on a daily basis.

Lucille is a self confessed ‘history nerd’ with a love for architecture, especially Cathedrals. She is also a keen Nottingham Forest supporter which she finds ‘challenging’ working in the centre of Derby!

Dr Alex Rock

Development Officer

Alex joined the Cathedral in July 2015 as Development Officer.  He came to Derby in 2012 after almost ten years working for Dudley Zoo, and completed his PhD in British Film History soon afterwards. Alex is a keen allotmenteer, a reader and collector of 1950s paperbacks, a real ale buff and a British film historian. His background leading audience development initiatives for some of Derby's prominent arts and culture providers alongside HLF project management experience at Derby Open Centre made him ideal for this role.

Laura Fraser

Laura BraithwaiteDiary and Events Coordinator

Laura joined the Cathedral in June 2015 in the role of Diary and Events Coordinator. Laura’s background is in event management and she previously ran events for a number of organisations including the University of Derby.

A Fashion studies Graduate from the University of Derby, Laura still enjoys making and creating in her spare time and can often be found with a project or two on the go. Laura is from Derby originally and after spending time living in London and New York returned home a few years ago. When not working Laura likes to make the most of the local music and art scene within the city.

Viv Lawrence

Viv Lawrence Schools Education OfficerViv joined the Cathedral staff in 2010 having worshipped at the Cathedral for more than 20 years. Born in Nottingham she is an experienced primary school teacher having worked in Derby City and County for many years as a music specialist, which she combines with her role at the Cathedral. When not teaching she enjoys singing in the Cathedral’s Voluntary Choir and Derby Choristers. She loves world travel, gardening, good food and the company of family and friends. She is secretly quite fond of fast cars and Star Trek.

 

 

Derek Limer

Derek LimerKeeper of the Treasures Derek has been a server at both the Cathedral and Bridge Chapel for over 30 years. Following his early retirement from staff of Lloyds Bank in 2003 he became a member of the Cathedral’s team of visitor guides. With the opening of the Cathedral Treasury in 2003 by HM the Queen, he has been responsible for the maintenance of the Treasury. Derek liaises with parishes in the Derby Diocese who wish to loan their silver etc for exhibition and is always available to parishes to talk about their silver and textiles conservation. A Vice President of Derby Civic Society and former Chairman of The Friends of Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Derek is always keen to promote Derby’s great industrial and cultural heritage. E: dereklimer@btinternet.com

John Howarth, MBE

John HowarthHead Server John's primary role is to organise and train the servers who assist the clergy in the Cathedral's main services. John has been involved with the Cathedral for over 50 years.A Chartered Mechanical Engineer, John worked for engineering companies in Derby until retirement and served as a Magistrate for over 20 years. He has been involved in Scouting since he was a boy and continues to assist when required. John was awarded an MBE for services to the Scouting movement in 2016. 

 

 

Gwyneth Shooter

Gwyneth ShooterChurch Warden and Safeguarding Link for Children Gwyneth has been a regular worshipper at the Cathedral since 1975 when she joined the choir as a 9 year old. Over the years she has enjoyed volunteering in various roles around the Cathedral. Currently she is a warden, child safeguarding link, and she also washes and irons some of the white linen. Also Gwyneth is a soprano of the Voluntary Choir and Derby Choristers. She is a primary school catering supervisor. Married in 1990 at the Cathedral to Robert an engineer at Rolls Royce and they now have two grown up children.
