Safeguarding is central to Chapter’s care for the life and work of the Cathedral. It is an item on the agenda for every Chapter meeting. A Safeguarding Committee, chaired by a member of Chapter, meets four times a year and reports to Chapter. This Committee includes members of Chapter, the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor, the Cathedral Safeguarding Links and a critical friend, who can offer a perspective and challenge from outside the Cathedral context. The role of this committee is to also review and implement any changes required to the practice guidance. The Cathedral’s Safeguarding policy can be found here.
The Cathedral Chapter adopt the Diocesan policy as well as following the Church of England’s practice guidance. Click here to see the Diocese of Derby Safeguarding Policy. https://derby.anglican.org/en/safeguarding.html. To download the national policies, please click here.
To report any issue, contact a Safeguarding Link on 07501 980700: Frances MacAlister (Adults) or Gwyneth Shooter (Children); or the Safeguarding Lead, Canon Richard Andrews, on 01332 341201. You can also report a concern to the Diocesan Safeguarding Team using the on line facility here: https://derby.anglican.org/en/safeguarding.html
Derby Cathedral wishes to place the experience of survivors of all forms of abuse, including sexual abuse, at the heart of its safeguarding commitment. A list of organisations offering support to survivors is available to download here.
Along with all English Cathedrals, Derby Cathedral was audited for its safeguarding provision by the Social Care Institute of Excellence (SCIE) in March 2019 and is available to download here. The audit was an opportunity to evaluate our practice and to learn how we can improve. The experience was positive and provided the opportunity for the Safeguarding Committee to work on producing an action plan to further improve safeguarding policies and develop good practices. Derby Cathedral’s up to date action plan is available to download here.
